Take a closer look at this tree:
Ouch! When this tree was planted it was swaddled in plastic, secured with a band. But no one remembered to cut the band off. The tree grew. The band did not. Slowly it strangled the tree - preventing nutrients from flowing between the roots and the leaves.
The tree would likely have eventually "swallowed" that--at some point as the tree's bole grew the bark would cover the band. I have found a clothes-line and pulley actually within the branch of a tree on my property, a sort of wooden fossil. It must once have been wrapped around the branch, but there was no external evidence. Trees have amazing strength; they will chew up boulders given time.
